As views go, the Swansea vineyard has a cracker. The 22-year-old vines look out over Great Oyster Bay on Tasmania’s east coast. It’s a spot that suits them. The result is a veritable rich Christmas cake of flavours; all concentrated spice and lashings of nice. Slightly lower acidity delivers a Pinot Noir that’s like a gentle, comforting hug. It’s rich, ripe, plush and rewarding to drink as a young wine.

The Details

Tasting Note Savoury notes with cocoa, rosemary and oak spice aromas overlay a core of tamarillo and ironstone. The palate is classic Swansea; soft, plush yet glossy tannins seamlessly in tune with natural, fine acidity. Ripe raspberry and cherry give richness to the mid-palate while underlying Christmas cake spice is very appealing with a long finish.
Best Enjoyed With Red cabbage braised in a medley of blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry served with barbeque venison steaks and redcurrant jelly. Layered beetroot, sweet potato, chard and celeriac pastie slice served with spiced tomato sauce.
Treatment The fruit was hand-picked with a small percentage of bunches placed into open top fermenters, the balance added after being destemmed. Fermentation commenced and concluded ten days later with gentle plunging. The wine was pressed before being racked to French oak barriques (33% new), and underwent malolactic fermentation during its 10 months in barrel.

Lipsmacking finish
This Swansea pinot noir is sourced from a vineyard overlooking Great Oyster Bay on Tasmania’s east coast. Red fruit tones here. Red cherry, some raspberry coulis and tamarillo with wood spice, fruitcake, dried meats, amaro, cola, pastis and purple floral tones. There's space and an airiness to the palate, with a briny, maritime acid beat, sapid and savoury, with a graceful, saline, red-fruited draw on the lipsmacking finish

Rich forward fruit of the warmer East Coast climate
Mid-light ruby with a faint tint of purple in the rim; spicy, lifted dark-cherry aromas, it has the rich forward fruit of the warmer East Coast climate. Full and round on the tongue, with a balanced, drying tannin grip.

Lovely even intensity and texture
Restrained and delicate aromas of plum and dark cherry set the scene, making way for tilled earth, campfire ash, ripe red florals, sweet pops of raspberry and waftings of nutmeg. Restraint is the word, and it’s working beautifully here with a wine of class and poise. The palate is lithe and similarly restrained, though with lovely even intensity and texture. This is delicious. Deep red florals, raspberry, dark cherry, nutmeg and a shot of stemmy spice work together magically in a lifted and cohesive aesthetic. The finish is long and framed by bitter cacao-laced tannins and piercing acidity. There’s not a hair out of place here. A Pinot Noir of grace, class and complexity. Bravo.
